Walnut shells are an odd thing to put in a litter box, and they work better than they have any right to.

The dark litter problem nobody warns you about
This is the one genuine drawback of walnut litter, and it is worth knowing before you buy rather than after.
Walnut shell litter is dark brown. Blood in urine is dark red. On light-coloured clay or white crystals, a bloody spot is obvious the moment you look in the box. On walnut, it can disappear completely.
That matters because the litter box is where most owners catch urinary problems first. Blood in the urine, called haematuria, is a common sign of feline lower urinary tract disease, bladder stones, infection and other conditions that get much harder to treat the longer they run.
What to do about it, practically:
- Scoop in good light and actually look. Turn the clump over rather than dropping it straight into the bag.
- Watch the behaviour instead of the colour. Frequent trips to the box, straining, crying in the box, producing only small amounts, or urinating outside the box are all signs, and none of them depend on seeing the urine.
- Keep one box on a light litter if your cat has any history of urinary trouble. It costs nothing and it restores the visual check.
- Treat a straining male cat as an emergency. A male cat repeatedly going to the box and passing nothing may be blocked, which is fatal within a day or two and needs a vet immediately.

Why walnut shells beat ammonia
The smell you notice from a neglected litter box is ammonia, produced as bacteria break down urea in cat urine. Different litters deal with it in genuinely different ways.
Scented clay mostly covers it. The fragrance sits on top of the ammonia and you smell both, which is why a heavily perfumed box can smell worse than an unscented one.
Crystal litter traps urine inside silica granules so the ammonia never forms in open air, though the crystals saturate and then the odour arrives suddenly.
Walnut shell is highly absorbent, and the maker says the shell material controls ammonia odor on its own. That is why it works without added fragrance, and why unscented is the version most people should buy.
The second advantage is dust. Clay litter shatters into fine airborne particles, some of it crystalline silica. Walnut shell is fibrous and does not shatter the same way, so there is very little airborne dust. If anyone in your home has asthma, this is a real benefit rather than a marketing line.
What to expect when you switch
Walnut feels and looks nothing like clay, so cats notice. Switch gradually rather than all at once.
- Go slowly. Start at about a quarter new litter and increase weekly over three to four weeks.
- Expect some texture opinions. Most cats accept walnut, but some dislike the coarser feel. Keep a box on the old litter during the transition so nobody is forced to choose the carpet.
- Do not confuse texture with a nut allergy. Food allergies in cats are almost always to proteins in food, not to litter, and walnut litter allergy is not a documented concern. Ask your vet if you are unsure.
- Store the bag sealed. Plant litters absorb humidity, and a bag left open in a damp room clumps worse than a fresh one.
