Store brands have a reputation, and it is mostly deserved. Cheaper ingredients, vaguer labels, a slightly worse version of the thing you actually wanted.
American Journey is Chewy’s own label, launched in 2017. It should fit that pattern.
It mostly does not, and the recall record is the most interesting part: in nine years, not one.
Can size changes the price more than the recipe does. The 3-ounce pate cases are $29.99 for 24, about 42 cents an ounce. The 12.5-ounce variety pack is $39.99 for 12, about 27 cents an ounce, so a home that empties a big can within a day saves more than a third.
Where it is made depends on the line. Chewy’s own answers on its product pages say the standard wet food comes from partner plants in Kansas, while the Landmark cans in broth are made in Thailand.
What a store brand actually means here
American Journey is a private label, which means Chewy owns the brand and pays a manufacturer to produce it. Understanding that structure explains both the price and the one genuine limitation.
Why it is cheaper. There is no marketing budget, no distributor margin and no retailer markup, because the retailer is the brand. You are paying for food and packaging rather than for advertising. That is a real saving, not a quality compromise.
Where it is genuinely good. Recipes lead with a named meat, they are grain free, and there are no artificial colours or preservatives. All of them meet AAFCO nutrient profiles for their stated life stage, so they can be fed as a complete diet. For the money that is a strong specification.
The honest limitation. Chewy does not publicly name the facilities that make it. Its answers on Chewy say most of the wet food comes from partner plants in Kansas and the Landmark line from Thailand. Ingredients are sourced primarily from the United States but also from Mexico, China, Chile, New Zealand and Germany. Compare that with a brand like FirstMate, which owns its own plant and can trace every ingredient itself.
It is also not human grade, which is a specific legal standard almost no pet food meets. The dry recipes contain meat meal, which is nutritious and normal in pet food but not fit for human consumption.
Chewy has now folded American Journey, along with Tiny Tiger, True Acre Foods and Bones & Chews, into a single Chewy Made brand umbrella. Expect packaging to change over time even where the recipe does not.

Nine years, zero recalls

- Availability: sold almost exclusively through Chewy, so a delivery problem is a food problem. Keep a spare case.
Should you buy American Journey?
Buy it if you want decent grain-free wet food without premium pricing, especially in a multi-cat house where the cost difference multiplies fast. The 12.5-oz cans are the cheapest way to feed it, at about 27 cents an ounce.
