Most cat toys are designed by people who make toys. These were designed by a man who spends his working life in the homes of cats that are, by their owners’ account, impossible.
Jackson Galaxy is the behaviourist behind My Cat From Hell, and the design principles show up in some of these products more than others.
The kicker toys in particular are doing something specific, and it is worth knowing what.
One detail from the listings matters for a lot of homes: both kickers here are catnip-free. The Kangaroo Kicker springs back after every kick and the Happy Hunter makes a ripping sound, so they work on cats that ignore catnip and on kittens too young to react to it, which most kicker toys cannot claim.
And a correction on the cleaner. The Scrub Meowt bottle is a 2.5-ounce on-the-go spot cleaner with a brush head, and its listing does not say it uses enzymes. For urine that has soaked into a carpet or mattress, use a full-size enzyme cleaner instead.

What a kicker toy is actually for
Kicker toys look like ordinary plush until you understand the motion they exist to serve.
When a cat catches real prey, they grip it with the front paws and pull it in, then rake with the back legs. That rabbit-kick is how a cat finishes a kill, and it is a hardwired part of the sequence rather than a quirk.
Which is why size is the whole design. A kicker has to be long enough that a cat can hold one end with the front paws while kicking the other with the back. A short plush toy cannot be kicked, only batted, so it never engages the behaviour at all. Most cheap plush toys fail on exactly this.
Why it matters practically. A cat with no legitimate kicker target often uses your forearm instead. If your cat grabs your arm and rakes with the back legs while playing, that is not aggression, it is the kill sequence landing on the nearest available object. Give them a proper kicker and the behaviour usually moves across.
Never use your hands as the toy. It is the single most common cause of a cat that plays too roughly with people. A cat taught that hands are prey does not distinguish between play and your ankle at 6am. Wand toys exist to keep the target well away from you.
Foraging, and why mental work beats laps

A cat in the wild spends a substantial part of the day hunting: searching, stalking, failing, trying again. An indoor cat with a full bowl gets that entire activity handed to them for nothing. The calories arrive but the behaviour has nowhere to go.
Foraging toys put the work back. Hiding kibble in a snuffle mat or a puzzle feeder makes the cat search for food, which occupies the part of their brain the bowl made redundant. Ten minutes of foraging tires a cat more than ten minutes of chasing a feather.
- It slows fast eaters, which helps with vomiting after meals and with weight control.
- It helps with over-grooming and attention-seeking, both of which are commonly linked to under-stimulation.
- Start easy. Make the food obvious at first. A cat that fails repeatedly at a puzzle gives up and does not come back.
- Use part of the daily ration, not extra food on top of it, or you have solved boredom and created obesity.

Cleaning up urine properly
The Scrub Meowt bottle is handy for small, fresh spots, but it is a 2.5-ounce travel cleaner and its listing does not mention enzymes. For urine, the type of cleaner matters more than the brand, because most people clean cat urine wrong.
- Cat urine contains uric acid, which ordinary detergents and vinegar do not break down. The visible stain goes and the compound stays.
- Your cat can still smell it. A spot that smells of urine reads as an approved toilet, which is how one accident becomes a repeated habit in the same place.
- Only enzyme cleaners digest uric acid, which is why the ASPCA recommends them for this specific job.
- Never use ammonia-based cleaners. Ammonia is a component of urine smell, so you are effectively signposting the spot.
- Soak, do not wipe. The enzymes need contact time and enough liquid to reach as deep as the urine went.
