Here is something most cat owners have never been told: there is no legal safety standard for pet carriers.
None. Any manufacturer can print the word safe on a box and sell it, and nobody has to test whether it holds together in a crash.
Sleepypod pays to have its carriers independently crash tested anyway. That is the whole argument for the brand, and it is a genuinely good one.
There is one line of fine print worth reading, though. The Mobile’s Center for Pet Safety certification covers pets up to 15 pounds. A big Maine Coon or a heavy-set male can easily sit above that, and a carrier tested to 15 pounds tells you nothing certain about a cat at 18.
Why crash testing pet carriers is voluntary
This is the fact that reframes the whole category, and almost nobody knows it.
Child restraints are legally regulated. A child car seat sold in the US must meet FMVSS 213, a federal standard, and it is tested against it. Pet restraints are not. There is no legal crashworthiness requirement, so a carrier can be marketed as safe without any testing whatsoever.
That gap is what the Center for Pet Safety exists to fill. It is an independent body that crash tests pet restraints against a standard it developed, reflecting the updated child restraint standard FMVSS 213b. Sleepypod’s full carrier line was the first to meet that updated standard in independent testing.
Why an untested carrier is a problem. In a collision an unrestrained carrier becomes a projectile, and a carrier that splits open releases a terrified cat into a car that may still be moving. The ASPCA covers travel safety basics. The risk is to the people in the car as much as to the cat.
What this does not mean. Certification is not a guarantee of survival in every crash, and Sleepypod’s own products have earned different star ratings in different tests. It means the product was measured rather than merely described. In a category with no floor at all, being measured is the meaningful distinction.

The carrier-as-bed idea
The Mobile doubles as a bed at home, and this is not a gimmick. It solves the behavioural half of the problem, which for most cats is the harder half.
The usual pattern: the carrier lives in a cupboard, comes out twice a year, and means the vet. Cats are excellent at pattern recognition, so the carrier itself becomes a threat. What follows is the familiar scene of a cat wedged behind the washing machine while you are already late for the appointment.
The fix is to break the association. A carrier that is simply a bed for 360 days of the year is not a warning sign on the other five.
- Leave it out permanently with the top off and a familiar blanket inside.
- Feed near it, then in it. Move the bowl closer over a week or two.
- Reward going in voluntarily with a treat, and never shut the door during this stage.
- Close the door briefly, then open it, gradually building up.
- Take short car trips that end at home, so the car does not always mean the vet either.
This matters more than carrier choice for most households. A cat who travels calmly gets to the vet when they need to, and a cat who cannot be caught does not. That is a real welfare outcome, not a convenience. Compare carriers in our best cat carrier guide and our cat backpack round-up.
Which Sleepypod fits your cat and your trips
Chewy carries a small part of the Sleepypod line. The Mobile link goes to the Blossom Pink colourway, which is the same carrier in a different colour.
| Product | Price | Size or fit | Pick it if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile carrier and bed | $224.99 | One size, certified to 15 lb | Your cat rides in the car often and you want it sleeping in the carrier at home too. |
| Air carrier | $199.99 | One size, compresses for under-seat | You fly. Check your airline’s under-seat dimensions before you order. |
| Martingale Plus harness, Small | $49.99 | 11 to 14-in chest | Your cat is slim or petite. Measure the chest rather than guessing from weight. |
| Martingale Plus harness, Large | $59.99 | 18 to 21-in chest | You have a Maine Coon, Ragdoll or other big cat. |
| Breakaway collar, X-Small | $15.59 | 5 to 7-in neck | You have a kitten or a very small cat. Most adults need a bigger size. |
Honestly, the Mobile is the one I would buy. The bed function is what gets a cat into it without a fight, and that matters more on the day than any spec sheet.
The harnesses, and the honest caveat
Sleepypod also makes cat harnesses, and the martingale design is genuinely thoughtful.
- Martingale tightens evenly under tension rather than concentrating pressure at one point, which is gentler on a cat’s neck and shoulders than a single-strap design.
- No harness is escape-proof. Cats have no collarbone and a compressible spine. Fit is what prevents escapes, not the brand.
- Two fingers of slack, flat between the strap and your cat, checked before every outing. Three fingers means they will back out of it.
- Measure the chest, not the weight. A lean Oriental and a stocky British Shorthair of identical weight need different sizes.
- Never leave a harness on an unsupervised cat, indoors or out.
Our Travel Cat harness review covers acclimation in detail, and the AVMA covers microchipping, which matters more than any harness if a cat does get loose.
Is a Sleepypod worth the money?
Buy the Mobile if your cat travels by car with any regularity and you want a carrier that was actually tested rather than merely labelled. The bed function is what makes it work day to day, and it is the reason to choose it over a cheaper crash-tested option.
Skip it if your cat travels twice a year and stays calm, where a well-secured conventional carrier is adequate. Note that Chewy stocks a narrow slice of the Sleepypod range: two carriers, the Martingale Plus harness, and a breakaway collar.
In a category where nothing has to be tested, this is the brand that gets tested. The carriers are expensive, well made, and certified against a standard derived from child seat testing.
The bed function is the underrated part, because a carrier your cat already sleeps in is a carrier you can actually get them into. Measure before buying a harness, use a breakaway collar, and start with the Sleepypod Mobile. This article is educational rather than veterinary advice.
Sleepypod questions, answered
Q: Are Sleepypod carriers actually crash tested?
Yes. Sleepypod’s carrier line has been independently crash tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety against a standard derived from the US child restraint standard FMVSS 213b. That testing is voluntary.
Q: Is there a legal safety standard for pet carriers?
No. Unlike child restraints, which must meet federal standards, there is no legal crashworthiness requirement for pet safety restraints. Any carrier can be marketed as safe without being tested.
Q: Why does a carrier that doubles as a bed matter?
Cats recognise patterns, so a carrier that only appears before vet visits becomes a warning sign. A carrier used as an everyday bed carries no such association, which makes getting your cat into it far easier.
Q: Which Sleepypod should I buy for flying?
The Air is designed to compress to fit under an airline seat while still working as a car restraint. Confirm the dimensions against your specific airline’s in-cabin requirements before travelling, since allowances vary.
Q: What size Sleepypod harness does my cat need?
Measure your cat’s chest girth rather than going by weight. Small fits 11 to 14 inches, medium 14 to 18 inches, and large 18 to 21 inches, which suits Maine Coons and other large breeds.
Q: Should my cat wear a breakaway collar?
Yes. A collar that cannot release turns any snag on furniture, fencing or a branch into a strangulation risk. Breakaway is the only collar type appropriate for a cat.
